November CPI rises 0.3 percent driven by energy

Consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in November led by higher energy costs including a 14 year high in natural gas. Core inflation gained 0.2 percent while annualized CPI through 11 months stood at 3.3 percent. Separately unemployment claims fell to 317,000, the lowest since August, the third weekly drop in a row.

County seizes video poker permits as court leaves status uncertain

Lt. Michael Frank says the Aiken County Sheriff's Office has issued 21 citations since November for video poker permit violations. The Supreme Court ruled the ban unconstitutional, but counties still require permits. only 25 sites hold both permits and operations are paused pending a final decision.

Fire claims life of 12 year old in Pinecrest area

Lamar D Nicholson 12 died in an early morning house fire near Pinecrest Elementary after his bedroom was separated from the others. The boy’s father and 15 year old brother escaped uninjured while the mother sustained minor wrist injuries. Coroner and investigators call the death smoke inhalation and rule the blaze accidental.

Mathis freed after verdict in murder case

Aiken County jurors acquitted Troy Mathis, 22, of murder in the Oct 20, 1995 killing of carnival worker Jerry James Brown. He faces remaining charges of witness intimidation and assault, but posted a $5,000 personal bond and walked free.

York Street Restoration Celebrated in Aiken Streetscape

Ultima Warren led a drive to revive York Street returning it to its 75 year old beauty. The city completed a Streetscape project funded 75 percent by HUD with the rest from the city, adding lights sidewalks landscaping and curb work. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh praised the improvement as a model for future city-wide efforts and business interest.

Aiken Jaycees seek $5,000 goal for Christmas Shopping Tour

The Aiken Jaycees report progress toward sending 50 needy children on a Christmas shopping spree but remain well short of the $5,000 goal. As of Monday only 1,195 dollars was raised, about 23 dollars per child, with the event set for Saturday morning. Contributions to PO Box 707 in Aiken SC 29802 are urged from the community.
