Over a thousand readers voted in the Aiken Standard’s Doonesbury poll. Tomorrow the results will be published revealing whether Doonesbury remains in the paper or is canceled and the comments readers submitted. The vote was close.
Building contractor and former acting mayor Marvin Baughman won Wagener’s mayoral race with 178 votes, defeating Gordon R. Carmody who had 31. Incumbent Frank W. Gantt chose not to run again. Council seats also decided with Louis J. Evans 109 to 98 over Pansy C. Lybr for Seat 2, and John Q. Hudson Jr. 136 to 71 over Koster R. Brown for Seat 4.
Rob Greenway announced his retirement from the Aiken County School Board after years of service. In remarks to the board he noted, I am seldom short of words, and tonight will not be one of those times. Chair Sally Bigger presented him a miniature school desk pen holder as a keepsake, hoping he might stay long enough to earn another.
Fund drives in Aiken County show Salvation Army at 21965 dollars and 9 cents Valley Empty Stocking Fund at 8753 dollars and 79 cents and the Jaycees Shopping Tour at 1519 dollars and 25 cents Donor list appears on page 6A highlighting community support for the holidays.
The Aiken Jaycees Christmas Parade starts tomorrow at 6 30 p m with Miss USC Aiken as grand marshal. The New Ellenton parade follows Saturday at 10 a m with Sheriff Carroll Heath as grand marshal and proceeds through Main Street from the water tower to the town’s south end.
Three men from the Wilmington area were convicted by an Aiken County jury of trafficking in marijuana for growing an estimated one million dollars worth of pot near Kitchings Mill. The nine jurors deliberated under an hour after evidence showed funds, a farm, and planted fields across March to May.
Dr. Paul J. Weston resigns as chairman of the Aiken County Democratic Party. Fay Hatcher, a county councilwoman, informs the party she will no longer participate in party activities. Weston sent a Monday letter to the party secretary announcing his resignation.
Trey Graham, a North Augusta High School senior and aspiring Metropolitan Opera singer, welcomed new auditorium plans but learned bids delayed elementary projects and that two new stadiums were planned while ninth grade classes would move to the high school with insufficient new classrooms. The change to a middle school model next year means NASH must expand.
Aiken County deputies and Williston officers arrested Frank Green Jr less than a day after he fled the Aiken County Courthouse by prying a window screen and slipping from a holding cell. Bloodhounds followed him to Marion Street before the trail was lost. He received an additional six months to his larceny sentence for the escape.
