Aiken County Council rejected state funding for refugee resettlement but federal law allows placement anyway. Karen Wingo of the SC Department of Social Services says federally funded services will still be provided to qualifying refugees and that the program is administered nationwide with vetting by the federal government. Local council member Chuck Smith urged stronger vetting, citing national security concerns. Refugees would be resettled by SC agencies Lutheran Services and World Relief, not the state.
