In Concord New Hampshire a retired 76 year old barber Charlie Bonjorno will wear an elf suit for a holiday job guiding shoppers in using the new garage meter system through Christmas Eve. Officials say the hire came after a month long search and lessons in recruiting in unusual habitats.
Washington AP The NIH panel urges weight control as the best approach to manage type 2 diabetes. It recommends a sensible diet including possible small sugar amounts, with fat at 30 percent or less, protein at 20 percent, and carbohydrates at 50 percent to reduce and maintain weight.

Former Defense Secretary Clark Clifford is among candidates for the independent counsel to investigate the Iran Contra affair. Officials say a three‑judge panel could appoint the counsel as early as today or by week’s end. Harold R. Tyler Jr. is also mentioned as a candidate.
CIA Director William Casey told a House committee a New York businessman tipped him in October about diverted profits from Iran arms sales. Casey said Roy M. Furmark informed him on Oct. 7, six weeks before Meese disclosed the scheme. The Washington Post cited congressional sources. top secret messages reportedly reached Casey via the CIA privacy channel.

In New York viewers flooded ABC NBC and CBS with calls after daytime soap operas were pre empted by live congressional hearings on the Iran arms sale. ABC received about 1330 complaints NBC about 1100 and CBS fewer than 36 as networks aired hearings for the first time since 1974.
