White House Visit Encourages South Carolina Jews

Six area residents returned from Washington D.C. hopeful about a signed Israeli Egyptian peace treaty. The Arkenites joined a Jewish delegation hosted by Rep. Butler Derrick for a White House briefing after a luncheon with Rep. Steve Solarz.

Aiken Parade Judges Praise Car Of Parade Marshal

Mills Fitzner and Roland Windham, two parade judges, praised the car that carried parade marshal Diane Toole at the Aiken Christmas parade. A spectator quipped that commenting on the car’s beauty over the queen showed cleverness. Windham whispered that an old English carol from the Aiken Choral Society concert, Welcome Yale, has been localized to Welcome Ya’ll.

City Council to Discuss Pornography Ordinance

The Aiken City Council meets tonight at 8 for the first reading of an ordinance governing display and sale of pornographic materials modeled after Rhode Island Display Law. Other agenda items include board appointments, bids for Laurens Street sidewalk work, plans for Beecham Products at Verenes Industrial Park, and readings on fines, annexation, and zoning for Joe Kneece properties on Richland Avenue. The session is public in the Municipal Building council chamber on Park Avenue.

Nobel Peace Prize Winners Renew Arab Israel Talks

Nobel laureates Begin and Sadat renewed their pledge to pursue Arab Israeli peace as 5,000 Norwegians protested awarding the prize. Begin attended the Oslo ceremony at Akershus Castle, while Sadat sent an emissary to read his message.

Chitty Case Postponed In Aiken General Sessions

Langley magistrate case against Lester L. Chitty and three Aiken County residents on ticket fixing charges is postponed to January due to Chittys health and Sylvia Westerdahls back injury. Judge Rodney Peeples will hear it on return. James E. Moore presides this weeks closing session. Jimmy Lee Hall faces assault and battery with intent to kill a police officer after a pursuit and arrest at the Ramada Inn. He will be sent to Georgia authorities for homicide questioning.

County Council Set to Accept 1978 Audit Tomorrow

Aiken County Council will meet at 7 p.m. in the Richland Avenue office complex to discuss 18 new items and review 13 old items. Chairman Carrol H. Warner says the audit will be accepted with many recommendations to tighten operations. the full audit is available to the public.
