Popular humorist Lewis Grizzard will begin regular opinion column features in the Aiken Standard on Wednesdays. Based in Atlanta, he writes for national syndicates and blends humor with occasional serious life reflections.
Alvin Hugh Coffield is set for trial in this week’s Aiken County General Sessions Court in the murder of Dr. John Gilliam. Co defendant Michael Albee will be decided later, deputy solicitor Bill Weeks says. The docket includes a Kitchings Mill drug case and an armed robbery of the Pink Dipper from May. About 80 indictments are listed. court opened at 10 a.m. with Judge Rodney Peeples presiding.

The board also reviews a state education department monitoring report noting deficiencies in certified staff facilities custodial services and class sizes and will consider a teacher job description workers compensation revision and maintenance committee improvements.
Aiken residents donate to several Christmas funds with totals: Aiken Jaycees Shopping Tour at $1,158.25, Salvation Army Cheer Fund $19,911.72, Valley Empty Stocking Fund $8,768.79.
