An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Peru Ecuador border area at 11 35 p m EST. The epicenter was 275 miles southwest of Quito and 50 miles southeast of Tumbes. The quake caused damage in nearby towns and left Peru's May 31 disaster with 200 000 homeless.

Students Arrested After Pine Forest High School Fight Near Fayetteville
In Payettville North Carolina seven white youths and eight African American youths were arrested after a fight at Pine Forest High School. Eleven of the detainees attended the school. Charges included dis orderly conduct with four additionally charged for carrying concealed weapons. All 15 were released to parents as deputies arrested ten soon after the incident and five more in the afternoon. No injuries were reported and classes resumed after deputies patrolled the halls.
