New Ellenton Offsets Electric Rate Hike
New Ellenton will see higher electric bills for city facilities after the town council approved a franchise agreement with Aiken Electric Cooperative raising the town’s fee from about 1 percent to 3 percent. The change shifts the burden mainly to city facilities while overall city costs rise by more than 10 000 dollars annually. Mayor Randy Shaw said the adjustment aligns rates with electricity costs and the old ten year contract ended. The council postponed the budget reading and will hold a special meeting. The town plans to petition the Public Service Commission over rural mailbox issues and revamp plans with Southern Bell, with upgrades targeted for 1989 to 1990.
