South Carolina Governor David Beasley orders a temporary hiring freeze on contracts over 10 000 and warns cabinet heads that noncompliance harms reappointment prospects as he fills cabinet positions. The 1993 law authorizes him to appoint 12 of 17 agency heads.

Judge Charles Whetstone denied bond for Willie Hicks a 28 year old Aiken man amid murder and armed robbery charges in the December death of Andrew C. Hagan. Prosecutors seek the death penalty with a speedy trial requested as Hicks could face trial in January 1995. The victim, 73, was beaten and stabbed after being tied, with three men suspected in the incident.
In the past week nearly 500 children were matched with sponsors for Secret Santa in Aiken County. About 300 children still lack sponsors as the season nears its end. Volunteers urge residents, Sunday School groups, and local businesses to step up and sponsor remaining kids.
John Ball 54 a welding instructor leads the Valley Changers a mixed group of residents volunteering to improve the area. Organized in February with help from Langley First Baptist Church and inspired by World Changers from the Southern Baptist Convention, they seek to fix up homes for the less fortunate.
