Space Center Houston reports astronaut Richard F. Ordon Jr will retire from the Navy and the space program next month to work with John Mecom Jr, owner of the New Orleans Saints. He cites two space flights and limited chances of a third as reasons for retirement. Apollo 12 veteran already completed Gemini 11 and Apollo 12 missions.
The House planned a vote on a $6 billion two year antipoverty package and a major child development program despite White House opposition and a possible veto. Speaker Carl Albert called it the paramount moral vote as Senate support included 27 Republicans and 63 none. The plan would provide free education nutrition and medical services for preschool children of working mothers with sliding scale fees for higher income families. All families would be eligible.
The dollar slid sharply on major FX markets hitting record lows in West Germany and Japan for the second day. Traders expect realignment of fixed rates and a reassessment of the dollar as the yen and mark are seen as undervalued.
Richard C. Gerstenberg, age 62, elected GM chairman and CEO as James M. Roche retires at month end under the retirement plan. Gerstenberg, currently GM chief financial officer, will lead the company after Roche’s four year tenure and amid changes in top management.
Mrs Helen Northrup Knox 69 wife of Seymour Knox died Monday in Buffalo General Hospital after a heart attack three weeks earlier. A Buffalo financier family, they owned homes in Buffalo Aiken and East Aurora. she supported the Philharmonic and was a painter and horsewoman. Survived by two sons Seymour Knox III Northrup Knox and six grandchildren. funeral Thursday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church Buffalo.
