Jobless claims fall 8000 as holiday week eases

The Labor Department reports initial unemployment claims at 336000 for the week ending November 23, down from 344000. The four week moving average rose to 837750, the highest since late July, with most gains in California, Texas and Minnesota and notable declines in Ohio and Alabama amid holiday effects.

Thurmond Plans Parachute Training Birthday Exercise

US Senator Strom Thurmond, celebrating his 9th birthday, will join a Fort Bragg airborne unit for a parachute training exercise though he will not jump. Thurmond, a former Army colonel who led in WWII, remains chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and president pro tem.

Checks delayed for retirement system recipients

Aiken Social Security Administration local manager Frank Stewart said this month's retirement checks were delayed by a day or two due to a mailing glitch at the Augusta Post Office. The delay affected expected Dec. 3 deliveries and was corrected with checks being delivered by Wednesday.

Direct deposits urged after mail delays in SSI checks

SS officials investigated delayed mailings after recipients did not receive checks on Tuesday. Stewart noted delays are not infrequent and urged beneficiaries to use direct deposits to banks. The system cites 42 cents per printed check and four to five cents per bank transfer as savings and theft safeguard.

Plans to close L-Lake at Savannah River Site

The Department of Energy seeks to shut down the 1000-acre L-Lake cooling pond and the river water system at Savannah River Site to save operating costs of about 11.5 million dollars for 50 miles of underground pipes in 1995. The public comment period on the environmental impact statement runs through December 30, with questions raised about future missions and land revegetation. Sam Booker of Augusta attended a North Augusta meeting voicing concerns. DOE staff say no identified future need exists except potential tritium missions.

Jaycees Tour Aims to Aid Needy Children at Christmas

The Aiken Jaycees prepare their annual Christmas Shopping Tour to provide winter clothing, shoes, coats, and an educational toy for fifty county children. Donations from local businesses and individuals have surpassed $800 as the tour funds shopping and a Santa visit on December 14, ending with a Christmas party.
