Researchers begin tests in chimpanzees of a prototype AIDS vaccine using a tiny protein fragment from the virus to elicit antibodies. The Science report says the fragment triggers strong antibody responses in animals and can be produced cheaply with engineered bacteria.
A CDC survey found 82 percent of NYC health department employees supported restrictions on smoking at work, including 69 percent of smokers. Dr Ruth Etzel notes the majority approved limits and says results align with non health workplaces.

Washington reports the civilian unemployment rate stayed at 7 percent for November the third month in a row. The Labor Department says 131000 new jobs were created while the pool of job seekers grew by 172000, lifting unemployment to 8283000 people. Service sector growth accounted for most of 12 month job expansion, with 120000 of November’s new jobs in business and health services. Retail hiring slowed with postponed seasonal adjustments, as stores cut prices to clear inventories and attract shoppers.
County groups team up to aid needy families with food and toys through the Valley Empty Stocking Fund and local drives. Chairwoman Mary Etta Walker notes the 14th year of the program with deadlines for aid requests by December 13 and mailing addresses for donations. Local sponsors include American Legion Posts 153 and 77 and Langley Bath Clearwater Lions Club with volunteers collecting at banks on December 11, 12, 18 and 19.
Washington reports the government is examining minimum federal rules for drug testing and rehabilitation of airline workers. Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole states a drug or alcohol abuse policy is essential, while random testing faces likely union and industry resistance.
