Lawmakers Reach Agreement on Defense Policy Bill

House and Senate negotiators have reached agreement on a 585 billion defense policy bill. It funds expanding the U S mission in Iraq to counter Islamic State militants and authorizes training of moderate Syrian forces. The package includes core military funding and a 1 percent troop pay raise, plus steps to counter sexual assault in the ranks. It extends authority to train moderate Syrian rebels battling Assad through December 11. The House vote is expected this week and the Senate next week.
