Nickels Dimes Separate County Bid To Rent Offices

Aiken County moves toward a rental deal for about 20 000 square feet in Kalmia Plaza to house several county offices. Chairman Carrol H. Warner said the talks with a Columbia investment group are near completion and would relieve space problems while saving money. If sealed, planning, tax collector and veterans offices could relocate, with ample parking and easy access for the public.

Donations To Christmas Fund Falls As The Load Continues To Increase

Needy residents of Aiken, Barnwell and Allendale counties have two more chances to apply for Christmas aid from the Salvation Army at its Aiken headquarters, 322 Gayle Drive. Applicants must bring ID for each household member and income and expenditure verification. Capt. Jerry Lyles says about 1,200 have applied so far, similar to last year, but donations trail, with $6,198 raised versus $7,258 by Dec. 1, 1988. Average gifts are $10-$12, down from $25 last year, as Hugo relief and earthquake giving draw funds. The kettle is busiest at Kmart and Wal-Mart. angel tree at Aiken Mall helps kids, with 150 angels claimed in week one. A mailing of 16,000 letters has been completed.

Litter Patrol Clears Roads In Aiken County

Groups in bright orange vests joined the Adopt A Highway effort in Aiken and Aiken County collecting litter along 25 miles of roadway. The first scheduled pick up date began at 9 a.m with civic groups and businesses taking part.
