An Ohio liquor law banning Santa Claus promotion of alcohol prompted removal of Bud Light 12 packs showing Spuds McKenzie in Santa garb. Spokeswoman Vicky Gelety said the Liquor Control Commission will decide on possible penalties for Anheuser-Busch or its distributors.

Soviet official Viktor Karpov criticized Shultz over data gaps amid the planned Washington summit to sign an intermediate range missile treaty. Reagan defended his hard line during a Jacksonville trip, urging true peace beyond words as talks with Gorbachev proceed.
Ellen Pattis returned from Iran with travel companion Kathy Lewis after visiting her brother Jon Pattis in Tehran’s Evin Prison where he serves a ten year sentence on espionage and passport fraud charges. An Associated Press panel of debate experts rated Vice President George Bush highest among Republicans in the NBC debate. Michael Dukakis and Albert Gore tied for top honors among Democrats. Seven judges gave Pat Robertson the lowest GOP score and Paul Simon the lowest Democrat score. The panel watched the debate at home using standard scholastic criteria.
