T Area at Savannah River Site Closed Six Years Early
The T Area section between Ellenton and the Savannah River, once central to the nuclear operation and testing near the Savannah River Site, was officially closed on Thursday. Officials cite an area closure approach, involving the DOE EPA and SCDHEC, as enabling the six year early completion with 28 buildings demolished, 91 cubic yards soil removed, a 10 acre geosynthetic cover installed, and 435,600 square feet of sod. Groundwater cleanup will continue for years.
