Fire destroys home after backyard cookhouse blaze

Sunday fire at 396 Mayfield Road leveled a family home and charred surrounding woods. The L D Fields Jr family escaped unharmed though one dog is believed lost. Firefighters from Aiken Public Safety and several departments fought the flames after stew was left cooking in a wood cookhouse behind a doublewide mobile home. Louie Fields suffered hand cuts while breaking a window to save a puppy.

Ten Young Mothers Seek Better Paths at Local Center

Ten women ages 17 to 23 enter the Aiken Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Services. Most are mothers, some with more than one child, and all pursue education at Freedman or Pinecrest centers while staying with their kids in a secure program. They undergo counseling and guidance to move forward.

Aiken shoppers flock to holiday weekend sales

Holiday shopping kicked off with strong crowds in Aiken as Staples and the Aiken Mall reported double digit gains. Staples on Pine Log Road saw lines before opening and surrounds with positive early Friday results, while mall stores noted solid weekend increases across electronics and other departments.
