Old SRS tanks get tentative safety clearance for upgrade
The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board says older Type I underground tanks at Savannah River Site could hold radioactive liquid after upgrades. No showstoppers found if work follows plan, though concerns on leaks exist. Space shortages push use of older tanks with one wall while newer tanks are doubly reinforced. Evaporator issues and a failed $500 million plant prompted partial filling plans. SC health and environmental control reviews the proposal.
