Aiken faces Greenwood at 8 p.m. and Silver Bluff meets Abbeville at 5 p.m. Saturday as both seek state football championships. Students, teachers, and parents rally with decorations, cookies, banners, and color guard plans as teams sharpen focus for playoffs.
South Carolina teachers attained 381 national board certifications, ranking fifth nationally behind North Carolina Florida California and Mississippi. In Aiken County three educators Esther Blake Theresa Casey and Joanna Dingle from Chukker Creek Elementary and North Augusta respectively earned the credential. Principal and district leaders praised the recipients as exceptional and dedicated to school improvement and curriculum planning.
Tonight at 8 p.m. the Aiken team faces Greenwood at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Live television coverage is provided by SCETV.
Silver Bluff faces Abbeville at 5 p.m. Saturday with CV coverage by SCETV. Student backing is strong and players were greeted after Thursday practice, as fans remind the Green Hornets of broad support.
The Florida presidential recount fight moved to the Supreme Court as George W. Bush urged invalidation of hand counted votes that narrowed his margin over Al Gore. Florida's high court was accused of rewriting election laws.
Senator Strom Thurmond said a casual remark about resigning before his 2003 term end should be disregarded. His office issued a correction after a Charleston Post and Courier report quoted him as considering stepping down if his wife could serve the remainder. Thurmond apologized for concerns among constituents and emphasized it would be inappropriate to leave office early. Mrs. Thurmond said she has no intention of holding public office and will support Strom to finish his term.
The Education Oversight Committee concludes six funding areas from the penny sales tax miss their goals and urges lawmakers to redirect money back to intended education priorities. The report cites 23.9 million for extra teachers, 9 million for vocational modernization, 6.9 million for Continuum of Care, 4.4 million for Tech-Prep, 3.25 million for technology needs, and 0.5 million for preschool bus drivers. John Cooley notes approval from State Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum.
