125-Year-Old Grist Mill Still Grinding in Aiken County

Virgil J. Yance operates a 125 year old water powered grist mill built by his grandfather Burley Vance on Mount Calvary Road near Aiken County. The mill uses a horizontal wheel and a heavy grinding stone to produce stone ground cornmeal for family and friends. Two ponds offer fishing with bass and catfish, while an old cotton gin site lies nearby. The mill remains a rare surviving example of early water power technology in the region.
