FBI Director J Edgar Hoover says college administrators must uphold order honestly and implement policies against disruptions. He urges firmness against unruly students and faculty likened to rabid anarchists, while policing on campus should be vigorous but restrained.
The Navy will end the fiscal year June 30 with 175 fewer active ships and 732 fewer aircraft than in 1968, per Jane's Fighting Ships 1970 71 edition. The Soviet navy is described as growing spectacularly with a merchant fleet rising from 1000 to 7000 ships since 1955 and a rapid expansion of the fighting fleet.
The Labor Department added seven cities to its list of substantial unemployment signaling 6 to 8.9 percent joblessness. Nominating petitions for Aiken County Council circulate with filing deadline under four days away. Only T S Brown of New Ellenton has paid the $200 fee to Eugene England, council election chairman. Other potential candidates include Robert Shellhouse Frank Cormany Carl Magee and Mrs. Morgan Mitchell with several undecided. Four seats will be chosen November 3 with a referendum on the council-manager plan.
AP reports Israeli airstrikes on guerrilla bases in Jordan and clashes on the Lebanon and Jordan borders. Egyptian spokesman Heikal in Al Ahram says Arab-Israeli talks will break down before the Nov nine day cease fire ends. A UN source says talks may last months.
The US Command reports 4,008 American helicopters lost in Vietnam with 4,152 Americans killed, and 43,418 Americans killed in action to date. Helicopter losses include 1,736 shot down in South Vietnam and 2,230 destroyed on the ground or by various causes. The service notes hundreds of fixed wings also lost and that over 4,000 helicopters operate in Indochina daily.
S Sgt Thomas L Fogle 33 of Aiken is listed among seven crewmen aboard a C124 Globemaster missing after a flight from McChord AFB to Cold Bay Alaska. Fogle environmental monitor at Savannah SRP Plant since 1962 and Georgia Air National Guard member. others named include Bowen Cohen Vaughan Goggans Jones with one name withheld.
South Carolina registration closes Oct 3 for the Nov 3 election. Residents must meet residency and age requirements, present Social Security numbers, and register at the county office behind the courthouse in Aiken. Current county lists show 32 400 voters with hours Mon through Fri and Saturday mornings.
A bomb shattered the American Legion building doors in downtown Seattle early today, scattering glass into the street. Police reported no injuries or arrests and said a search found no other explosive device.
Walter Lee Martin, 15, of Dothan Alabama, alleged to have joined the Army under aliases to serve in Vietnam after two prior wounds. He reportedly married while posing as S Sgt Albert Lewis Jr and was later assigned to Fort Carson. FBI arrested him for fraud on the government as the Army discovers duplicate pay and identities.
Donnie Webb a school bus patrolman and Aiken High student was injured this morning when he fell from a bus after it stopped at a railroad crossing on Park Avenue. He was carried to Aiken County Hospital for observation. The driver was Richard Lynn of New Ellenton.
