Mir crews join in space endurance test on Mir

A Proton rocket lifted from Baikonur carrying cosmonauts Vladislav Lyakhov Valery Polyakov and Afghan pilot Abdul Mohmand toward Mir for an endurance mission. Polyakov will monitor health of crew already aboard since December as Soviet TV aired the launch and then cut away.

West Germany bans air shows after Ramstein disaster

West Germany suspended military air shows and urged NATO to halt stunt flying after three Italian jets collided and one struck spectators at Ramstein Air Base. At least 45 killed, about 500 injured including many critically burned. many victims were children. Defense Minister Rupert Scholz announced the ban and Bonn officials froze further displays.

Tropical Storm Chris Damages Carolinas Killings and Floods

Tropical Storm Chris spawned tornados that damaged houses and mobile homes and caused at least one death in the Carolinas before weakening and moving toward Virginia.
