An Aiken County Sheriff’s investigator and several associates are charged in a May 1978 car arson plot to defraud an insurer. Hamilton, Henson, Heath and the Baughman brothers face counts of placing incendiary devices in a vehicle with bonds set at ten thousand dollars each. The case involves multiple warrants and ongoing investigation by SLED.
The certificate of need for a 132 bed nursing home will reach Aiken County soon. DHEC official John McNeeley expects final issuance to the County Council by week’s end or early next week. Anne Maria Nursing Home had objected due to funding fears but withdrew after adding beds. Cecil Inc. projects higher costs but says negotiations continue. Land behind Aiken Community Hospital remains an option.
Hurricane David moves west northwest toward Martinique with 140 mph winds. Warnings were in effect for Guadeloupe Dominica St Lucia Barbados St Vincent and the Grenadines. Bridgetown faced gale winds as tourists stayed in hotels and authorities prepared.

Bruce Pollard, a two time Olympic silver medalist, returned to Aiken with two silver medals at the International Special Olympics in Brockport New York. The event sponsored by the Joseph P Kennedy Foundation featured 35000 competitors and will air on ABCs Wide World of Sports.
