Aiken Community Band closes Summer Concert Series tonight

The 85 member Aiken Community Band conducted by Col William Clark performs at Hopelands Gardens ending this year's Summer Concert Series. Catherine Stapleton will sing Over the Rainbow as part of a program including Overture 1812 and Patriotic selections.

Rose Hill May Become New Retirement Facility In Aiken

The Aiken Planning Commission will consider a rezoning request Tuesday to convert most of Rose Hill on Greenville Street from Residential Multifamily High Density to Downtown Business. Cypress Project Corporation led by Dr. Beata G. Priore plans a senior living home with three meals daily, housekeeping, activities, and a 40-suite building, housing eight to ten residents in the main house and a communal area. If approved, the development would be treated as an inn or hotel, with Downtown Business zoning among the permissible options.

Investigation continues in death near Edgefield Highway

The body of a woman was found Saturday near S C 19 north of the city by two boys on four wheelers. Aiken County officials indicate dental records are being used with Newberry medical examiner care to identify the decedent. No obvious signs of foul play noted as autopsy began.

Housing issue on Tuesday agenda in Horse District

The Planning Commission moved a decision on allowing a manufactured home at Bruce McGhee’s training facility on Banks Mill Road to Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Opponents of changing the ordinance urge maintaining the ban on manufactured housing in the Horse District.

St. John's opens Ebenezer Center after 15 months

The St. John's United Methodist Church consecrated the Ebenezer Center, a $5.5 million building, after 15 months of construction. More than 1,000 members and guests attended, filling chairs, bleacher space, and hallways as Rev. Sheila Rogers led the service and reflected on the project.

Violent crime drops 10.4 percent in 1999 survey

The Justice Department reports a record 10.4 percent drop in violent crime in 1999, the largest decline in 26 years of the survey measuring crimes reported by victims. Property crime also fell sharply, and the study notes 28.8 million violent and property crimes.
