Freighter Sinking With 23 Aboard

A 350 foot freighter carrying 23 crewmen was reported sinking amid 15 foot seas and hurricane force winds near Isla Clarion. A Coast Guard C 130 from Sacramento reached the Blue Falcon 900 miles southwest of San Diego to assist with rescue efforts as Venturous and Nalo Express prepared to aid.

Snyder files for Senate in District 25 nominating race

Belvedere nursing home administrator Jimmy L. Snyder filed for the Democratic nomination in State Senate District 25 during the two week filing period. He names election of Public Service Commissioners trucking regulations and industrial recruitment as priorities joining Tommy Moore and Thomas Murphy. Other filings include Irene Rudnick Nikki Setzler Fred Christensen Ryan Shealy Tom Jones and James Goodman. Republican Fred Cavanaugh also seeks Council Seat 8 against William Clyburn.

Monetta Man Charged In Drug Manufacturing

Burnett DuBose, 45, was charged with marijuana manufacturing after police confiscated more than 1,000 plants at his Monetta farm. He posted a $10,000 bond and was released from the Aiken County Jail. His trial is set for the Sept. 10 term of General Sessions Court.

Frog removal and flag mishap headline from Belvedere area

A Belvedere woman asked the Aiken County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Jenkins to remove a frog from her home. He complied and resumed his patrol. On the first day of school two St Marys fifth graders volunteered to raise the flag but found it attached upside down before retrying.

Aiken Cablevision Proposes Lineup Change and Hearing

Aiken Cablevision owners plan an August 30 channel lineup update to fix reception and service issues. A public hearing September 4 will address franchise complaints, with council considering action. The system serves Aiken and nearby towns, with First Carolina Communications owning the Georgia and South Carolina transmissions.

School Year Opens Smoothly Across District

The first day of school went smoothly per teachers and principals. Superintendent Dr. Nancy Smith said visits to schools showed a smooth start with a full day preferred over half days. New attendance policy requires 170 days of class for credit. 85 of 90 days for semester courses.

North Augusta delays 1677 acre annexation over paperwork

North Augusta City Council postponed the Blanchard and Kellogg tract annexation of 1677 acres due to incomplete documents after Kellogg withdrew from the petition. Belvedere Fire Commission opposed the expansion north of Belvedere Clearwater road citing growth concerns. A revised petition and water-improvement discussion followed the cancellation.
