Aiken Man Dies In Traffic Crash On Highway

Aiken County Coroner Sue Townsend reports 23 year old David Donnie Cook of Rt 4 Box 640 died when his Chevrolet SS rolled at least three times after he cut sharply back into his lane near U S 1 across from Aiken Municipal Airport. Cook was on his way back from taking his father to work at Graniteville Company. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 05 a m. Authorities say he suffered a broken neck and multiple body traumas. His brother and sister tried to lift the car with jacks but could not. The crash occurred about 8 15 a m.

Wood String Band closes Hopeland Gardens concert series

The New Wood String Band performs tonight at 7 at Hopeland Gardens for the season finale of the Hopeland Gardens Summer Concert Series. Beech Island Man Charged in North Augusta Doctor Murder

Alvin Coffield, 18, is charged with murder and grand larceny in the slaying of Dr. John Gillam at his North Augusta home. A juvenile is also in custody on murder and grand larceny charges after a two state manhunt ended with Coffield surrendering to Augusta authorities. The autopsy cites two gunshots to the head. The getaway motorcycle belonged to the victim. Coffield’s mother helped persuade him to surrender.

Mont Louis Sinking Off Ostend Raises Radiation Risk

A Belgian research vessel found no radioactivity near the Mont Louis wreck off Ostend after a collision with the Olan Britannia. The 225 tons of uranium hexafluoride gas were in airtight drums, with officials noting containment but warning barrels must be surfaced within months.

UPS Truck Flips After Collision At Aiken Intersection

A UPS truck and a 1974 Buick collided at Abbeville and Chesterfield streets in Aiken. The truck flipped onto a parkway trapping the driver’s arm. Buick driver Clifford L. Courtney of Aiken was uninjured. UPS driver William Sizemore Jr. of Augusta, 29, was treated for an injured arm at Aiken Community Hospital. He wore a seat belt and was not ejected.
