Plutonium disposition plans face funding and exit strategy debate
A June 2000 Clinton White House release outlined a U S Russia agreement to dispose of at least 34 metric tons of weapons grade plutonium by irradiation or immobilization. The US aims to use 25.5 tons as fuel and immobilize 8 tons. Russia plans 34 tons as fuel. Costs exceed 1.7 billion to 4 billion over two decades. Bush era criticism centers on funding and delaying the MOX facility at Savannah River Site and calls for an exit plan for stored waste.
