In the primary results Tommy Hartnett wins U S Senate district, Greg Ryberg faces Sonny Sanders in a runoff for S C Senate 24, Howard Sellers leads sheriff race in the Republican column, William Lawrence sheriff Democrat, Barbara Morgan solicitor Republican.
Night of surprising results in the primaries saw rapid vote counting under three hours. Dent Johnson underestimated turnout by nearly 7,000. Sheriff Garol Heath lost in a Howard Sellers landslide, while William A. Lawrence won the Democratic sheriff nomination in a three way race. Greg Ryberg and Sonny Sanders advance to a Sept. runoff for Senate District 44 GOP nomination.
Barbara Morgan, the incumbent solicitor, defeated Jim B. Huff in all three circuit counties Ac on Bamberg and Barnwell with margins of 7 465 to 5 777 in Acon County 106 to 59 in Bamberg and 863 to 362 in Barnwell. She now faces Democrat Carroll Bryant in the November general election. Morgan praised her record and a clean race while noting the historic moment of a female solicitor candidate. Huff said he was glad he ran his campaign.
Greg Ryberg led the Republican primary in District 24 but Sonny Sanders forced a runoff with Lexington County backing. Sanders defeated Kerg by more than 700 votes in Lexington and Ai ken, advancing to the Sept. 8 runoff where the winner faces Democrat William Kent in the Nov. 5 general election. Unofficial AIken Lexington totals show Ryberg 4,727 to Sanders 2,929. other candidates trailed. The district runs from Lake Murray in Lexington through Aiken and Beech Island to North Augusta, one of the state's largest geographically. Both candidates spent late hours seeking support from defeated rivals Brodie Bruce and Shaw.

Franklin Louisiana reports Hurricane Andrew battering Louisiana with 140 mph winds and tornadoes, inflicting widespread damage and flooding. The storm caused gas line explosions, evacuations, roof losses, and injuries, with 175 evacuated and a Patterson high school losing its roof. No Louisiana deaths reported yet, as officials warned of a slow decline.
