The U S Army Jazz Ambassadors perform a free 7 30 p m concert at South Aiken High School on Sept 10. The 20 piece ensemble founded in 1969 plays 500 shows annually and travels about 40000 miles yearly. Alumni include Stan Kenton Buddy Rich and Wood Herman.
A new 4 percent excise tax on casual sales of motor vehicles and related crafts takes effect this year. Citizens may pay at limited county offices until highway departments start collecting at regular hours within weeks. Officials say funding gaps and limited staff caused the temporary restrictions.
Clifton L. Williamson, chairman of the Aiken County Board of Education, will not seek re election in November. After nearly seven years on the board he cited wanting to be more available to his family as the reason for stepping down, expressing confidence in continued excellence in education.
Aiken County votes to rescind a May 4 resolution that would put four referendum questions on the November ballot. The questions covered electing the council chair, form of government, council size, and district vs at large representation. The decision followed an executive session and input from Election Commission chair Lamback, who warned wording must arrive by August 30 to be advertised.
Aiken County Board of Education approves first reading to allow principal expulsion for bus misconduct to align with new state law. Superintendent Paskel calls for quick implementation before the new school year starts. The board also plans long term band room expansion at Aiken High and relocates the NJROTC unit to the vocational wing at North Augusta High School.
