County sheriff says crime down but calls up

Major Jody Rowland of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office notes major crime has fallen since 1996 yet calls for service have surged. He cites declines in murder, aggravated assaults, burglary, larceny, and auto theft, with a rise only in forcible rape. He warns domestic violence laws and staffing gaps strain resources and urges adding 16 deputies and 4 investigators to handle the workload.

Thurmond Hospitalization Reignites Health Scrutiny

Sen Strom Thurmond, 96, checked into Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington after collapsing in South Carolina and suffering fatigue from a busy weekend. Spokesman John DeCrosta said he would be treated for a chronically enlarged prostate and had spoken with Thurmond who said he was tired and needed to go. He was previously released from a Columbia hospital after tests and remained active on his weekend schedule.

Student population in Aiken County schools rises again

The official third day count shows 24 730 students in Aiken County public schools, up from 23 900 on the first day and 196 below projections. North Augusta Elementary leads gains, South Aiken High rises to 1 987, Silver Bluff High drops to 878, and Schofield Middle falls to 698 as educators note fluid early counts and pending district and state tallies.
