Immigration agency vows tougher enforcement after failed self deportation program
ICE plans stronger actions against illegal immigrants despite the scrap of the self-deportation pilot that drew only eight volunteers. Officials say arrests will rise as more agents are added, while critics call the move a public relations effort amid fear and disruption. The program offered up to 90 days to leave and applied to about 457,000 of the nation’s 12 million illegal immigrants in five cities including Santa Ana and Chicago.
