Population and area figures from the South Carolina Budget and Control Board and U S Census show GVW at 7172 residents within 22.86 square miles versus Aiken County's 152,307 people in 1087 square miles.

The pro GVW group cites new services and access to federal state funds through a franchise vote. Anti GVW groups warn of municipal taxation loss of identity and regulatory overreach. Pro position claims tax and regulation stay current while con notes no new utilities or services would result.
The proposal asks five mills extra for homes in the incorporation area. Proponents say incorporation improves fire safety public water services and doubles police coverage. Opponents argue no real improvement costs and tax revenue would be unrealistic.
The ballot asks whether to incorporate and chooses the municipality name and form of government options. It outlines government forms Strong Mayor Strong Council or Council Manager and election methods at large by municipality ward-based elections and mixed approaches.
After vote tally 50 percent plus one GVW owes $600 to the Secretary of State for a Certificate of Incorporation. Council election starts immediately and GVW becomes a municipality only when officials are elected and qualified. An attorney says no waiting period for refiling petitions, so the process could restart at once.
If the vote is yes a lawsuit challenging incorporation procedures could be filed within 60 days focusing on irregularities and code breaches. The action would target procedural flaws and potential violations in the process.
The Aiken Soccer Cup drew close to 10 000 fans as youth players ages 9 to 19, parents, and coaches gathered for the 13th annual event hosted by the Aiken Soccer Club. The tournament featuring North Augusta and Augusta teams to form the GASC Bulls includes more than 400 games with the championship decided today.
Aiken police say Brendan Ryan Wilson, 22, of 1207 Gray Mare Hollow Road, died when his 1995 Jeep Cherokee left Silver Bluff Road near No 3 Jenifer Drive and struck a tree during a pursuit by an Aiken Department of Public Safety officer. The driver was the sole occupant and pronounced dead at the scene.
Aiken mourns Rev. John B. McCullough a longtime Lutheran pastor and community servant who died Friday August 22 2008. A Columbia native he earned a Master of Divinity from Theological Seminary in 1942 and a Master of Arts from Teachers College Columbia University in 1946 before moving to Aiken in 1942 for his first pastorate at St Paul.
