Two Die In Head-on Collision On Old Barnwell Road

A fiery head on crash on Old Barnwell Road in Montmorenci Friday afternoon killed both drivers. One victim died at the scene and the other, from a Mitsubishi, died at the Medical College of Georgia after being airlifted. The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigates possible center line crossing and urgent road closure disrupted traffic for hours.

Panel criticizes testing cutback in state education plan

A South Carolina oversight panel questions the decision by the Department of Education to scale back next spring’s standardized test plan for elementary and middle school students. Only two grades per subject will be tested, with fifth and seventh graders taking science and fourth and eighth graders taking social studies. The measure aims to save 1.2 million dollars, though all six grades will eventually take both subjects.

Task force targets DSS overhaul in state cabinet review

A government panel appointed by Gov. Mark Sanford plans a major restructuring of the Department of Social Services to curb waste. Chair Ken Wingate said recommendations will be released after Labor Day after a public hearing at Greenville Technical College. The panel will report by Sept. 3 and DSS, with 5,000 employees and offices countywide, covers welfare children’s and health programs including Medicaid. Sanford can order changes without new legislation. About 60 people attended the hearing, including the governor.

New York security experts say the Sobig Internet attack failed to unleash harm. They stopped the spread by identifying and blocking key coordinating computers. the supposed payload only accessed a porn site, with no malicious actions realized.
