Aiken County Department of Social Services will shed seven clerical positions by Sept. 1 as part of a statewide layoffs totaling 252 positions. Director Austin Scott cautioned no field staff cuts will affect services while noting one vacant post cannot be filled.
USC Aiken earns third place in U S News and World Report 2004 rankings among public colleges in its division. Elizabeth State University and Winston-Salem State University tied for first, USCA finishes third for the sixth straight year. Chancellor Hallman praised the news as beneficial to campus and the Aiken community.
The Aiken County School District faces only a 1 percent state funding cut for now. Officials say the district budget was based on 1643 dollars per student rather than 1777, with monitors in place as districts prepare for possible future shortfalls.
Dr. Todd Wright leads the Savannah River Technology Center with 981 employees and seven patents issued in recent months.
