Local Leaders Denounce Racism Over Lake Admission Incident

Aiken County leaders condemned racism after two black Cub Scouts were barred from Richardson's Lake near Warrenville and Graniteville on Aug 17 while white scouts from New Ellenton Pack 409 gained entry. The incident spurred plans to form a county Human Relations Commission to educate and reduce discrimination, with five county appointees and representation from Aiken, North Augusta and smaller towns. The NAACP called for a federal probe under the Public Accommodations Act and Sen. Moore labeled the act violation deplorable. Lake owners defended public access and said the manager acted independently in denying tickets to the boys.

Aiken businessman Joe D. Wyatt dies at 46

Joe D. Wyatt of Aiken and his brother Vernon E. Wyatt built Wyatt Development Co into a leading regional firm during the 1970s and 1980s. He collapsed at a sister’s home while dining and was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. An autopsy is planned to determine cause, with the firm’s lawyer noting the company is closed today.
