Eight more Brazilians are diagnosed with cholera raising Brazil’s total to 59. The cases were reported in remote Amazon towns near Peru and Colombia as health officials plan seven medical teams for seven towns along the western border to curb the outbreak.
A nurse, Joseph Dewey Akin, 34, of Marietta Georgia, is sought on a murder warrant over the March death of a critical care patient at Cooper Green Hospital Birmingham. Jefferson County DA David Barber said Georgia probes 17 suspicious deaths at North Fulton Regional Hospital Roswell where Akin worked June through December 1990. No Georgia charges filed yet.

Aiken NAACP requests state and federal probes after two black Cub Scouts were barred from Richardson's Lake while white Pack 409 members were allowed entry. Lake owners deny discrimination, citing manager's actions. National NAACP seeks review by state Human Affairs Commission and Attorney General, with a federal inquiry also considered.
A press conference was held at 430 pm behind the Aiken Municipal Building. County and city officials from Aiken and North Augusta announced civic initiatives. Sponsoring groups include the Greater Aiken and Greater North Augusta Chambers of Commerce and the Commission on the Future of Aiken.

Dozens of armed Cuban inmates seized at least 11 hostages during a deportation clash at Talladega Federal Correctional Institution in Alabama. The maximum security block houses 121 Cubans and 18 Americans, with 32Cubans slated for deportation. Officials described the group as volatile and determined to avoid repatriation.
Boris Yeltsin led about 100000 supporters in Moscow outside the Russian Parliament as the hard line coup unraveled. Gorbachev returned to remove remnants of the coup, thanking Yeltsin and pledging to forge new relations with the popular leader. The failed plot collapsed as tanks withdrew and Soviets rallied in support of Yeltsin.

Superintendent Dr Joseph Brooks spoke of budget cuts delaying raises while urging a positive outlook, praise for students, and the growing role of technology in preparing learners for the future. Suzanne Dunbar Maroney urged collaborative effort to foster student growth and understanding.
