Teen linked to 6 million facility case not homicide suspect

Aiken Department of Public Safety says Crosland Park teen Ricky D. James Jr. 17 was arrested on a bench warrant for failing to perform 40 hours of community service, not for the Jessica Carpenter homicide. Police obtained a search warrant after the revelation that the teen was inside the home. DNA was requested but not confirming guilt.

Partnership breaks ground for $6 million Aiken project

Ground was broken Monday afternoon for a 6 million project to house the Aiken Community Playhouse and the Washington Government Operations Unit of Washington Group International Inc. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh hailed the public private partnership as a milestone for Newberry Street. The project uses no public money for the Washington side. city funds of 1.5 million go to the playhouse portion, with 250,000 already raised for the two floor 300 seat theater. The unit employs about 15,500 people in 30 states. The project aims to anchor downtown development and unite the playhouse with Washington Government in a shared building.

Houndslake zoning hearing moved to Wednesday

Aiken zoning hearing for two applications on a planned six story condominium near Hitchcock Parkway and Houndslake Drive will occur Wednesday afternoon. Planning Director Ed Evans said the earlier Monday edition misstated the day as scheduling conflicts forced the meeting date change.

Insurance reform cuts South Carolina auto premiums

The Insurance Department reports a 1999 drop of 75.8 million dollars in premiums, about 4 percent, after capping recoupment fees for high risk drivers. Excluding recoupment changes, premiums would have risen 102.1 million or 7 percent, while overall bills fell 177.9 million due to reforms aimed at boosting competition.

Two Asians to face trial in Ennis murder case

Two men linked to the June 1997 shooting death of Carlton Ennis may go to trial next month at the Sept. 5 term. Prosecutors await transcripts from co-defendants as witnesses in the Ennis case. Witnesses tied to the plot say the group traveled from Charlotte to rob Ennis’s Southside Pawn and Gold Shop.
