Rescue teams abandoned hopes of survivors aboard the Kursk after determining the Russian submarine was completely flooded following an Aug 12 explosion during Barents Sea exercises. All 118 crew members are presumed dead. officials consider raising the sunken vessel a weeks to months task.
The Fort Gordon Signal Corps Band of 40 members will perform patriotic selections and show tunes at 7 p.m. on the Roland H. Windham Performing Arts Stage in Hopelands. Three vocalists join to offer additional songs. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and a picnic. Parking is at Rye Patch Lot. handicapped parking at Hopelands on Dupree Place. If weather turns inclement, the concert moves to H. O. Weeks Center Gym 2.
Two state anti lottery spokesmen will attend a Tuesday rally with the Aiken County Republican Party. Ed McMullen of the S C Policy Council and Kathy Bigham of No Lottery 2000 address the crowd at 7 pm, following a 6 pm GOP business meeting at the City of Aiken Municipal Auditorium. Diane Giddings backs anti lottery views, calling it a tax on the poor. A South Carolina estimate says residents would pay about 112 dollars yearly in lottery tickets to fund 150 million dollars for education.

U S federal investigators and Ford explore if Ford lowered Explorer tire pressure guidance contributed to Firestone tire failures linked to at least 62 deaths. Bridgestone/Firestone recalls 6.5 million P235/75R15 ATX ATX II and Wilderness AT tires from a Decatur plant, affecting Ford trucks and SUVs.
An internal Ford document urges lower inflation to reduce rollover risk for Explorers, but under inflation raises tire overheating and failure risks. The 15 inch Bridgestone tires were advised at 30 psi by Bridgestone, with Ford later accepting 26 to 30 psi. News reports cited the document in The New York Times and Washington Post.
