Sewage to Oyster Meat: Woods Hole Research Project

Researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution study turning sewage into seafood by feeding sewage to algae and then to oysters and other shellfish. Led by Dr. John Ryther the project aims to produce over 900 tons of oyster meat yearly from a town of 50 000 people with potential value around 5 million dollars. The two year study moves to a 575000 dollar laboratory near the campus with six algae ponds and a 1000 gallon per minute pump system to test the theory.
