Regional officials press for bulk of DOE settlement
Aiken Allendale and Barnwell counties urged Gov. Henry McMaster to award the lion’s share of the $600 million settlement with the Department of Energy to the three counties that bear the Savannah River Site burden. Leaders said the funding must stay in the region given decades of plutonium work and nuclear waste, while McMaster signaled support for the majority remaining local.

Two Aiken men get life for 2019 Derrick Curry murder
Denzell Deshawn Jackson and Sha Kel Rakeem Dixon were sentenced to life in prison after a weeklong trial in the Aiken County Courthouse. They were convicted of murder kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in the Curry case who disappeared May 1 2019 and whose body has never been found. Prosecutors used cellphone records to place participants at the scene and argued Curry was killed after being lured to a witness home and goods burned. Judge Clifton Newman presided.
