A North Augusta incident on Interstate 20 left a North Carolina woman and her daughter injured and transported to the Medical College of Georgia after gravel spilled from a load caused by mechanical problems. Charles Prosser, 50, will face charges for spilling the gravel. Martha Page, 38, and her 3 year old daughter Katrin, of Waxhall NC, were aboard a Toyota minivan when a Kenworth tractor-trailer skid on the gravel and struck the van, which hit a guard rail. The tractor-trailer driver Wendell Collum, Heflin AL, was not injured.
Aiken Center for the Arts opens two new exhibitions this Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Matthew Whitford, an oil and charcoal artist, shows in the Westinghouse Group Gallery while photographer Susan Lucas appears in the Wyatt Development Children's Gallery. Sponsored by the Aiken Junior Women's Club and Sugusta Magazine, the event invites inquiries at 641-9094.
Annette Watzlavik, 50, of Aiken, died in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 26 east of Bowman after losing control and overcorrecting. Her husband, Victor Watzlavik, 47, was injured and flown to MUSC. Both wore seat belts.
Barnwell County Magistrate J W Witherspoon denied bail for Ricky Allen Morris 39 on charges including criminal sexual conduct assault and battery and kidnapping. Police say Morris abducted the woman on August 12 drove to a rural area and raped her then kept her overnight at his Fawn Drive home and raped her again. The next day authorities say a fight occurred and she was shot in the head. An investigator said Morris agreed to seek medical treatment only after she told doctors the injury was for personal safety.
