DOE Reuses Tanks at SRS. Grout Fills Save Money
The Energy Department will leave radioactive waste in 49 aging Savannah River Site tanks and fill them with concrete grout. Pumping out most waste to a separate facility would cost far more, about 100 million dollars per container, while grouting costs around 4 million per tank. The decision aims to balance environmental protection with cost savings, though risks remain.
