New term begins August 28 with Dr. Linda Eldridge as superintendent. The Aiken Standard publishes a back to school section with plans and bus route listings. Schedules arrive late and appear on Page 5A, excluding East Aiken Elementary routes.

Westinghouse Savannah River Co planned a 71 million refurbishment of the D Area powerhouse at Savannah River Site to keep 145 jobs and supply all SRS steam and about 25 megawatts. DOE balked at funding the 5 million first installment and questioned the overall 90 million scheme. WSRC had studied options since 1992 varying from a steam-only station to utility ownership and gas-fired boiler options.
