The CDC reports 35,241 U S syphilis cases in 1987, a 30 percent rise to 14.6 per 100 000, matching 1982 as the highest since 1950. The increase was greatest among blacks and Hispanics, despite AIDS concerns.
A 25 year old man from San Bernardino died in Garden Grove California after an unknown person in a oral surgeon's office injected lidocaine into his arm instead of glucose during a wisdom tooth procedure. The coroner found no criminal wrongdoing but the California Board of Dental Examiners is investigating the death.
