A cool look back at summer vacation on the coast of Maine. The piece notes 25 years ago SRS scientists made the plutonium fueling twin space probes that now voyage beyond the solar system.
NASA marks the 25th anniversary of Voyager 2 and notes Voyager 1 linked to Cape Canaveral on Sept 5 1977. The probes revealed Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune and many moons while Savannah River Site workers supplied plutonium 238 powering the missions.
NASA officials fear the Contour comet chasing ship is lost after new images from Kitt Peak show two parallel trails near its predicted position. Mission director Robert Farquhar called the situation "pretty bad news" as Johns Hopkins APL confirms the craft was on a multiyear mission to study comets.
A USC Aiken public safety corporal, Robert Allen Wintrow Jr., 10, was killed in a two vehicle crash on SC Highway 19 north of Aiken during a thunderstorm. The other driver, wearing a seat belt, was hospitalized. no other passengers were aboard.
The Aiken County Farmers Market celebrated 50 years of operation with crowds at Williamsburg Street. The pavilion heard brass band tunes by the Aiken Brass Band and music by the Kenny Cook Band as visitors enjoyed watermelon and anniversary cake amid flowers and produce.
