Figures from Aiken County show 73.5 percent of 10th graders passed all three exit test subtests on their first try, up from 72.3 percent in 2001, while statewide pass rate fell to 67.4 percent from 69.1 percent. Superintendent Dr. Linda Eldridge called the rise welcome as the state noted declines.
Wagener Salley High School fed Aiken County's improvement with an editorial 88 percent of its students passing last year. Aiken High School took second place honors with a 2.6 score as results from the exit exam were released.
The New York State Education Department reported that 67.4 percent of 10th graders passed the high school exit exam on the first try, down from 69.1 percent last year. Reading and writing rates fell, while math stayed the same. Public school students must pass the tests to qualify for graduation.

Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said the Department of Energy will accelerate six tons of plutonium shipments from the Rocky Flats plant near Denver to South Carolina for a planned $4 billion facility to convert the material into reactor fuel. He cited delays from South Carolina Governor Hodges and reaffirmed DOE’s commitment to closing Rocky Flats on schedule.
