Indictment Bends 22 North Augusta Augusta Residents in Sting
Acting U S Attorney Beth Drake announced a 45 count racketeering and fraud indictment targeting 22 residents from Murphy Village near North Augusta and Augusta. The group allegedly devised schemes to obtain life insurance benefits food stamps Medicaid funds and car financing fraud. Aiken County lowers millage and adds city fee to taxes
Aiken County Council cut the total 2017 millage from 69.9 to 68.5 in a unanimous consent vote and approved a new City of Aiken fee to appear on County tax bills next year. The FY2017 rates set County Operations 54.0, Debt Service 3.9, Solid Waste 6.0, Roads 1.5, Aiken Technical College 2.8, USC Aiken 0.3, and College Acres Public Works District 44.0 mills amid a $621,000 assessed value basis.

Nuclear watchdog coalition sues DOE over Canada to Savannah River waste
A seven organization coalition led by Beyond Nuclear and the Sierra Club has filed suit against the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration. They allege NEPA requirements were not met for planned shipments of liquid high level radioactive waste from Chalk River Ontario to the Savannah River Site. The release says the corrosive liquid contains cesium strontium iodine plutonium-239 and weapons grade uranium-235 and warns of containment risks if leaked. Trucks would travel through densely populated areas and waterways including the Peace Bridge.
