A two vehicle crash on US 278 Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of John Andrew Neahons, 3, of Williston Road in Aiken. He died at the scene from multiple injuries after a westbound Ford Explorer crossed the center line and struck his eastbound Ford F-150. Driver Mamie H Bush of Williston Road was hospitalized with non life threatening injuries. The crash backed up traffic around 4 30 p.m. as crews cleared debris and investigated speeding cited as a contributing factor. Charges may follow after the investigation.
South Carolina ends its 2006 fiscal year with a 171.5 million surplus. Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom notes the figure was helped by 453 million of the surplus spent in the current budget. The gains follow 300 million and 243 million surpluses in the two prior years, signaling a turnaround from the state’s earlier financial distress four years ago.

The South Carolina State Ethics Commission has dismissed an ethics complaint filed by Willar Hightower against Aiken County Council members, including Chairman Ronnie Young. Executive Director Herbert Hayden said the charges lacked sufficient facts to constitute a violation and did not move beyond preliminary investigation.
