Under a broiling sun AP reports Shannon Faulkner, the first woman cadet in The Citadel’s 152 year history, remains in the infirmary recovering from heat exposure after day one of cadet training. A college spokesman said she is to be released today.
State Rep. Billy Boan of Death Springs plans to announce Thursday in Lancaster with Gov. Beasley and House Speaker Wilkins. He said he faced a choice of being a player or not and chose to switch parties. In Columbia, condemned killer Sylvester Adams requests clemency be denied as Beasley supports death penalty and Adams awaits lethal injection on Friday morning after 15 years on death row for the 1979 killing of a 16 year old neighbor.
William L. Goff of Warrenville died at age on date in local hospital. Survived by wife, children, and siblings. Service details announced by the funeral home with burial at local cemetery.
Aiken Planning Commission on Tuesday recommended tighter off site parking limits for churches. Current rules allow up to 50 percent off site within 1 500 feet but zoning changes would require conditional use approval in residential zones.
Businessman James Barron accused the Aiken County tax chief and county officials of inaccurate slipshod property reassessments that created higher tax bills. He urged the council to remove Tax Assessor Patricia Antley and criticized using out of county appraisers for field work. Barron cited state mandates, a surge in appraisals, and more than 11 000 appeals as evidence of flawed process.
Sarron told the council he came to speak for those without a voice and noted appeals are available though many property owners struggle. The council blocked a Ferrara plan to reevaluate large-appraisal increases and instead passed McKenzie’s amendment to refer the issue to Gov Beasley and the General Assembly for possible state action to extend appeals deadlines and offer counties new options to fix appraisal problems.
Hurricanes Felix with 80 mph winds neared the Outer Banks prompting evacuations and warnings from South Carolina to Delaware. Hatteras Island owners braced as boats moored and windows boarded, with 5 to 10 inches of rain forecast and high surf along the coast.
National Weather Service warns heat indexes 105 to 110 degrees with no relief likely until weekend. Meteorologist Vincent Palpol says temperatures fall only slightly and Felix rainfall unlikely to affect conditions. Officials urge outdoor activity limits and hydration during peak sun.
Traffic eased on the roadways while Hatteras Island endured heavy clouds and pounding waves. Water sales spiked along the coast with 840 gallons sold by afternoon at a Carolina Beach grocery. In Morehead City, shoppers grabbed jugs of water at a discount store before the chaos subsided.
Woodside Plantation youth clubs from the eastern region won the 995 All Francis Youth Sports Festival at Countryside Club in Tampa after three days of golf tennis and swimming. Forty four competitors across three sports contributed to Woodside's first place as Countryside and Woodside had battled in recent years.
