A tanker truck tore apart after a sideswipe on U S 78 near Oakwood Windsor elementary school at about 12 45 am. The Keenan Transport truck driven by Richard Bradley Duncan of North Augusta spilled gasoline onto the highway. The other vehicle fled the scene. a green trailer mark was noted on the Keenan truck.
The Department of Energy will hold scoping meetings in Aiken on Monday to gather public comments on an environmental impact statement for cooling water systems at the Savannah River Plant. The EIS will address cooling choices for thermal discharges from the C and K reactors and the D Area plant, plus construction and operation impacts. Two sessions are set at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the H Odell Weeks Activities Center on Whiskey Road.
Ai ken County Coroner Sue Townsend nearly missed her Kiwanis Club appearance when she was stung by four wasps outside her farm home while feeding animals in a terrycloth nightgown. Her family supports her and she proceeded to speak at the event.

July housing starts plummet after a 0.8 percent June rise and a 13 percent May drop. Analysts blame ongoing weakness despite lower mortgage rates now near five year lows. New home sales stay sluggish with no June change, while year over year starts remain 4.4 percent below the 1984 peak level.

Dealers report over 1000 satellite dishes in Aiken County as the market grows. They claim cable and dish coexist, with dishes serving areas where cable is absent. Installation costs range from 1400 to 3000 dollars, and about eight local dealers sell one to two dishes weekly. The dish offers up to 80 channels and six movie options, plus premium sports and entertainment packages.
